"Bless us João de Deus (Pope John Paul II) [2x]
Our people embrace you"

"A bênção, João de Deus
Nosso povo te abraça"

This song was created by Brazilian catholics when Pope John Paul II came to Brazil for the first time in 1980. The same year Fluminense was in the finals of Taça Guanabara with a team of youths against Vasco da Gama. The match ended 1-1 and went to a penalty kick decision. Fluminense fans were already traumatized due to a decision lost in the same situation 4 years ago and started singing this chant, in order to ask the Pope to bless us in that nervous moment. That was when our goalkeeper defended two shoots and we were able to go to the finals of Campeonato Carioca, being champions of that competition. Since then, this chant comes out when in a bad or nervous moment to give us hope.
